01 — Us

How we got here

One of us keeps a towel in the car year-round. The other knows which train car puts you at the right staircase. We have been arguing about the better place to watch the sun go down for years now, and neither of us has conceded an inch.

So we found the loophole: a beach house with a skyline standing right behind it. On August 28th, 2027, we'd like you on the sand with us — and afterward, in the city, for as long as you can stay upright.

Engaged on a mountain in August, which is the one place neither of us picked.

Where to stay

Renaissance Chicago Downtown

1 W Wacker Dr — a Marriott hotel

We are holding a block of rooms here under the Cichowski wedding. It sits downtown where the river bends, which puts most of the Sunday list within walking distance and the shuttle right at the door.

Getting back

Shuttles to the hotel

63rd Street to downtown — about twenty-five minutes

There is no easy cab off 63rd Street at midnight, so we are running buses back downtown ourselves. They pull up in front of the beach house, where you came in, and they keep going until the last person is on one.

Departure times land here with the rest of the schedule.

The sensible one Straight to the hotel

The shuttle stops at the door. After a day that started on sand, going straight upstairs is a completely respectable outcome.

The other one On to the afterparty

A bar a short walk from the hotel, for anyone still upright. Same shuttle, same drop-off — you just keep walking. We will name the place here once we have picked it.

04 — While you're here

Things to do, mostly within a mile

Promontory Point

A limestone hook sticking into the lake, ten minutes north. The skyline view from the rocks is the best one in the city and nobody charges for it.

Museum of Science and Industry

Straight across Jackson Park. There is a captured German submarine parked inside, which never stops being strange.

Osaka Garden

A Japanese garden on the Wooded Island in the middle of the park. Quiet, shaded, extremely forgiving of a Sunday morning.

Valois, Hyde Park

Cafeteria line, trays, no menu you cannot see from where you stand. Get the eggs and do not overthink it.

The Lakefront Trail

Eighteen miles of path. Head north from the beach house and the sand slowly turns into downtown, which is more or less our whole thing.

An architecture boat tour

Downtown, on the river. Worth the trip north the day before, and the only tourist thing we will personally vouch for.
